Video Analysis - Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone

This music video allows the singer (Alex Turner) to create a relationship with the lyrics as he shows off his talent that he can write a song which does not need any props, technology in order to promote the song. The music is simply him singing the song on a plain white background. He uses some of his actions to relate to the lyrics such as “She held me very tightly” where he grabs his arm until the line of the song ends. The video allows the singer to tell his audience of his feelings for the girl and his quest to find her where he fails but instead finds her sister who is the more similar to anyone he has met since the girl. Alex continues to look at his audience allowing a stronger connection between himself and the audience watching the video. This allows the audience to hear the lyrics of the song in more detail and gain a quick understanding of what it represents.

This is a very simple video which could only be used by an already established artist as a new band would not be able to create the connection between them. At the end of the music video light appears onto the white background which portrays that he has found someone who is very close to what the girl who he was searching for is like.

Even though there aren’t many visuals in this music video it creates a very strong relationship between the performer and the audience. It allows the audience to concentrate on the lyrics and the performance than be distracted from visuals which will take this effect away from the song. There is a low amount of mise-en-scene used in this video. The props used in this video are simply a microphone and a small amplifier. This means that the audience doesn’t get distracted whilst listening to the song. The costume used is simply a red jumper and black pants, this allows the video to have some visual presence but not overdo it. The setting of the music video is a white background which creates a nice effect and works extremely well with the song. It would be very difficult to apply this to our song and get an effect of the same magnitude.

The video looks as if it has been shot in one continuous take which allows it to run smoothly. There is no star image of this video as the setting and costumes remains the same throughout the video. The performance style of the video is very relaxed and tries to make the lyrics have more of an impact than the video itself.
